The Church's DNA
October 12, 2025 Speaker: Brad Carpenter Series: Acts: The Church is Born
Passage: Acts 1:1–8
Discussion Questions:
1. Witness of the Gospel — What Are We Really Telling?
In Acts 1:8, Jesus calls his followers to be “witnesses,” not experts, or persuaders- just people who testify to what they’ve seen and heard.
- What does it mean for you personally to be a witness of the gospel in your neighborhood, workplace, or relationships?
- How can we keep the core message of the gospel—“Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again”—at the center of what our church communicates, even amid social or political pressures?
2. Power of the Spirit — Not Our Own Strength
The disciples wanted a plan, but Jesus told them to wait for the Holy Spirit (1:5).
- When have you been tempted to “move ahead” in your own strength rather than wait on God’s power?
- What might it look like for our church to rely more deeply on the Spirit’s power in our ministries, relationships, and decision-making?
3. The Double Helix — Holding Together Word and Power
The sermon compared the witness of the gospel and the power of the Spirit to the intertwined strands of DNA.
- How have you seen these two—truth and power, message and presence—work together in your own spiritual life or in the life of the church?
- What happens when a church emphasizes one (message or power) at the expense of the other?
4. Rediscovering Mission in Uncertain Times
Pastor Brad began the sermon with honest reflections on seasons of uncertainty- personally and as a church community.
- How can times of confusion or loss become opportunities to return to our core DNA as followers of Jesus?
- What would it mean for you to recommit to Christ’s mission “to the ends of the earth,” starting right here in your own community?
