Missionary Encounter

November 23, 2025 Speaker: Brad Carpenter Series: Acts: The Church is Born

Passage: Acts 17:16–32

Discussion Questions:

1. Looking, Listening, and Loving
Paul walked through Athens observing its idols, listening to its poets, and engaging its people with compassion rather than condemnation.

  • Where do you sense God calling you to "look, listen, and love" in your own daily environments--your workplace, neighborhood, school, or online spaces? What helps you observe with compassion rather than frustration or fear?

2. Identifying Modern Idols
The sermon points out that while our society may be "post-Christian," it is far from "post-religious."

  • What are some modern idols--cultural, political, personal, or digital--that you see shaping the worship and desires of people today? Which of these tend to influence you the most, and how can we help one another stay oriented toward Christ?

3. Finding Connection Points for the Gospel
Paul used Athenian poetry, philosophy, and even an altar inscription as bridges to share spiritual truth.

  • What are some contemporary "altars to the unknown god"--expressions of longing, restlessness, anxiety, or search for meaning--that provide natural connection points for gospel conversations today? How might you respond to these openings with humility and hope?

4. The Gospel as Good News for Real People
The sermon describes how Paul might address modern longings for justice, identity, purpose, or rest.

  • Which aspects of the gospel (justice, forgiveness, purpose, identity, rest, and hope) feel like "good news" to people you know right now? How might God be inviting you to embody or articulate that good news in a missionary encounter this week?
