What to Remember When You Find Yourself in the Valley
January 4, 2026 Speaker: Daniel Yoon Series: Do Good: James
Passage: James 1:1–8
Discussion Questions:
1. Trials of Various Kinds
- James addresses believers who are scattered, suffering, and under pressure. How does that historical context shape the way we hear his commands today?
- What kinds of “trials of various kinds” does James seem to have in mind in verses 2 - 4? Which ones feel most relevant to our cultural moment?
- James commands us to “count it all joy.” According to the sermon, why is this not an emotional reaction but a conscious, faith-filled choice?
- The sermon defines joy as “deep satisfaction that comes from knowing God is in control even when circumstances are out of control.” How does that definition correct common misunderstandings of joy?
2. God’s Character in the Midst of Hardship
- When life is painful, why are we especially prone to doubting God’s love or blaming him for our struggles?
- James says every good gift comes from the unchanging Father. How does God’s immutability bring comfort in unstable seasons?
- How do verses 16 - 18 reframe our view of God when suffering tempts us to spiritual cynicism?
3. Personal and Communal Application
- Where are you currently being tempted to “cut and run” rather than persevere in faith? What is one truth about God from James 1:1 – 18 that you want to consciously remember the next time life gets hard?
- How can our group help one another respond to trials with truth-shaped joy rather than feeling-driven reactions?
- If someone watching your life saw how you respond to suffering, what would they learn about the God you believe in?
