Asking for Wisdom

January 11, 2026 Speaker: Brad Carpenter Series: Do Good: James

Passage: James 1:5–8

Discussion Questions:

1. Recognizing Life as Ongoing Trial
The sermon suggests that every stage of life brings its own trials, not just seasons of obvious suffering.

  • Where do you currently experience tension, uncertainty, or testing in your life?
  • How does viewing these situations as “tests” meant to shape maturity change the way you respond to them?

2. The Questions We Instinctively Ask
In times of difficulty, we often ask questions like “Why is this happening to me?” or “How do I get out of this?”

  • Which questions do you most naturally ask when facing trials?
  • How might asking God for wisdom—rather than just relief—reframe those questions and your expectations?

3. Faith, Doubt, and Being Double-Minded
James warns against being “driven and tossed by the wind,” yet the sermon distinguishes between honest struggle and conditional faith.

  • What is the difference between wrestling honestly with God and testing God with conditions?
  • What helps anchor your faith when circumstances don’t change the way you hoped?

4. Receiving Wisdom Through Scripture, People, and Christ
The sermon points to Scripture, spiritually mature people, and ultimately Jesus as sources of God’s wisdom.

  • Spend some time as a group discussing how God’s perfect wisdom is on display in the person and work of Jesus.
  • How can this group become a place where wisdom, perseverance, and maturity are shared with one another?
