Letting God's Word Do Its Work

January 18, 2026 Speaker: Brad Carpenter Series: Do Good: James

Passage: James 1:19–25

Discussion Questions:

1. Quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger
James 1:19 - 20 connects anger with an inability to receive God’s Word.

  • In your own life, what kinds of situations most often make you “quick to anger”?
  • How might practicing being slow to speak and quick to hear create more space for God’s Word to take root?

2. The implanted Word and real change
The sermon looked at James 1:21 and emphasized that we don’t clean ourselves up before receiving God’s Word—rather, the Word does the work in us.

  • Can you share a time when a desire for freedom or wisdom led you to Scripture, and God used it to change you in ways you couldn’t manage on your own?

3. Mirrors, self-deception, and repentance
James 1:22 - 24 warns that hearing the Word without doing it leads to self-deception.

  • When you read Scripture, what helps you move from recognition (“this applies to me”) to response (repentance, obedience, or change)?
  • What tends to get in the way?

4. The “law of liberty”
James 1:25 calls God’s Word the “law of liberty,” which can feel counterintuitive in a culture that equates freedom with no limits.

  • How have you seen obedience to God’s Word bring freedom—either personally or in relationships—rather than restriction?
