True Religion
January 25, 2026 Speaker: Daniel Yoon Series: Do Good: James
Passage: James 1:26–27
Discussion Questions:
1. What is Religion?
- When you hear the word "religious", what instincts or reactions do you have—positive or negative? How did the sermon challenge or refine those instincts?
- James says false religion deceives the heart, not just behavior. What are some subtle ways we might confuse outward faithfulness with genuine faith?
- The sermon talked about “double treachery”—deceiving ourselves and then convincing ourselves we aren’t deceived. Where do you see this temptation most clearly in your own life?
2. Our Conversations: Controlling the Tongue
- Why do you think James focuses on the tongue as an early indicator of worthless religion?
- How does our speech—especially in anger, criticism, or online—reveal what’s really going on in our hearts?
3. Our Compassion: Orphans and Widows
- Why do you think James highlights orphans and widows specifically? Who might be today’s equivalents in our context?
- The text says “to visit” orphans and widows in their distress. What does the word "visit" imply beyond charity or good intentions?
4. Our Character: Unstained
- In what ways does the gospel actually produce the kind of compassion and holiness James describes?
- What’s one concrete way God might be calling you—or this group—to practice “pure and undefiled religion” this week?
- If someone evaluated your faith primarily by your speech, compassion, and character, what might they conclude? Where do you most need to preach the gospel to yourself right now—in your speech, your compassion, or your holiness?
- How does Christ—who perfectly bridled his tongue, moved toward the helpless, and remained unstained—give both comfort and power to live out this passage?
