If You Can't Say Anything Good
February 15, 2026 Speaker: Brad Carpenter Series: Do Good: James
Passage: James 3:1–12
Discussion Questions:
1. What Does Your Tongue Reveal?
James echoes Jesus’ connection of our speech to the condition of our hearts.
- Looking at your own patterns (anger, exaggeration, silence, sarcasm, flattery, defensiveness, etc.), what do your words tend to reveal about what is going on beneath the surface?
- Can you share a recent example where your speech exposed something in your heart?
2. Small Words, Big Impact
Reflect on the images of the bit, the rudder, and the spark.
- When have a few words (yours or someone else’s) significantly redirected a relationship, a family dynamic, or a ministry situation--for good or for harm?
- What makes words so disproportionately powerful?
3. Practical Self-Control vs. Heart Transformation
The sermon offers practical strategies for taming the tongue, yet James also says no human being can tame it.
- How do we hold together wise habits (pausing, listening more, embracing silence) with the deeper need for a new heart?
- Where have you seen behavior modification fall short without heart change?
