The Gospel According to James
March 1, 2026 Speaker: Brad Carpenter Series: Lent 2026: Do Good
Passage: James 4:1–10
Discussion Questions:
1. Diagnosing the Real Fight
James says our external conflicts flow from internal “passions at war within us.”
- Where have you seen this play out in your own life- where pride or self-interest fueled tension with someone else?
- Why do you think pride is often easier to see in others than in ourselves?
2. Friendship with the World
James calls divided loyalty “adultery” and warns that friendship with the world is enmity with God.
- In what areas of life (career, parenting, politics, finances, reputation) are you most tempted to “play by the world’s rules”?
- What would it look like to remain fully engaged in those spaces while operating by gospel values instead?
3. Pride vs. Humility Before God
“You do not have because you do not ask.”
- Why is it so hard to ask God--or others--for help?
- What might humility look like practically for you right now (in prayer, confession, accountability, finances, relationships, etc.)?
4. The Gospel According to James
James says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble… Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.”
- How does the gospel free us from both self-promotion and self-condemnation?
- Discuss how the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus embodies this message.
