Powerful Forgiveness
April 19, 2026 Speaker: Brad Carpenter Series: Short Letters, Big Mission
Passage: Philemon 1:1–25
Discussion Questions:
1. Real repentance is more than remorse or regret; it requires turning around. In Onesimus’ case, that meant physically returning to the person he wronged.
- What might “turning around” look like in our lives today when we’ve sinned against someone?
- What makes this step so difficult?
2. The sermon suggested that real repentance accepts consequences and doesn’t demand forgiveness.
- Why is it important that repentance doesn’t come with expectations attached?
- How have you seen this misunderstood or misapplied in relationships?
3. Forgiveness is described as "paying a debt" and choosing relationship over what is owed.
- What makes this kind of forgiveness so costly?
- Can you think of a situation where forgiving someone would require you to absorb real loss, and discuss how the gospel empowers and encourages that?
4. Paul models both teaching and living out forgiveness (especially in his reconciliation with Mark).
- Can you share a story of someone who demonstrated forgiveness in a way that has significantly impacted your life?
- Do you agree with this statement: "Forgiveness cannot be demanded or commanded, but it can be demonstrated."?
