His Only Son, Our Lord

September 20, 2026 Speaker: Daniel Yoon Series: Creed

Passage: Matthew 16:13–17

Discussion Questions:

1. When you hear the name “Jesus,” what are some different ways you hear people in our culture describe or understand him? What do those descriptions get right? What do they miss?

2. What does it mean that Jesus is the Christ? That he is the Son of God? Lord?

3. Read Matthew 16:16-17 again. Peter makes this remarkable confession, but Jesus says that “flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.” What does this teach us about how someone comes to recognize Jesus for who he truly is?

4. What is the difference between believing that Jesus is Savior and actually submitting to him as Lord? If Jesus really is Lord, what areas of our lives are we most tempted to keep under our own authority?

5. If you had to answer that question without using the words of the Apostles’ Creed, how would you describe who Jesus is?

6. The Scriptures contain several “only” claims about Jesus: the only Son, the only name, the only way, the only mediator, and the only sacrifice for sin. What makes these claims difficult for our culture to accept? How should Christians communicate these truths with both conviction and humility? How should this shape the way we pray for unbelieving friends and family?
