Gathered Church Series

Please see the full transcript below:

Daniel: My name is Daniel, one of the pastors here, at Grace Sacramento welcome. You know every sermon series we feature a different art piece by a resident artists. Especially those who attend our church which is one of the neat things about being a part of this particular community: we get a chance to feature not just the art but the artist this morning I have the the pleasure of of having a Flannery Carpenter with us and just wanted to interview her about the art piece for our sermon series. Again, we're going through a new sermon series in Acts chapter two of the first church and so as you were given the assignment Flannery of kind of looking through Acts chapter two about the first church what was it what was the the thing that was the most striking thing about Acts chapter two?

Flannery: Well, when I was reading it, it was all about you know like the breaking of the bread and the fellowship and you know about what makes up a church and what I really think makes up a church is community and that's some one of the things that we don't really have right now. So, I wanted to make something that I thought really symbolized that that's beautiful.

Daniel: Well, first of all your artwork is awesome. Thanks for doing it yeah can you describe your art piece to us again? Explain what you used? How you painted it and kind of some of the symbolism behind? [...] and so you don't mind just talking a little bit about the artwork?

Flannery: Okay, so I wanted it to symbolize a home which we're in a lot of right now and suddenly like there's like shining community that we can have our homes to be, a place [to] gather with people and I thought that this would be something that would really show that. I did this with liquid watercolor and then I did a the door in a gouache which is like a mixture of like acrylic paint and watercolor.

Daniel: I love that you tell us a little bit about the kind of the rays of light that are coming from the door.

Flannery: Well, I thought in the beginning I was going to do a door you know like bread on the thing cuz of like the breaking of the bread, but then I really thought about it and I wanted it to really shine with something that I think really makes up the church. So, that's why I put the rise of light.

Daniel: I love it, yeah, thank you for doing that. What do you miss most about gathering together as a church?

Flannery: I really miss the people being able to talk with people at church and I also miss the donuts.

Daniel: Okay, yeah, I do, too. I do, too. I'm not going to lie. What words would you give to people watching and listening at home and how to stay hopeful during this time?

Flannery: Well, what I've really been thinking about is I know [things are] really uncertain and we don't know what's going to happen next but it's all part of God's plan and we just need to trust that it's not like he just woke up one morning and was like well I'm going to make a Corona virus, right? It's all part of his plan and which [we] need to trust in it.

Daniel: Well, thanks for those encouraging words. Thanks, Flannery, for the artwork and I'm looking forward to this next five weeks.

Flannery: Thank you.
